The Greatness of Austin DJs

Bird Peterson, DJ Mel, DJ Chicken George.

What do all of these names have in common? In a town that prides itself on being the "Live Music Capital of the World" (not that there's anything wrong with that) these guys serve as the DJs. Night in and night out they spend their time feeding us juicy morsels of funk and groove. In some situations the DJ can be a position of prominence. DJs are thought of as the cool guy, the sexy guy; the guy in the know. Many DJs become profitable, travel around the world, produce music, etc. However, most DJs (much like most live musicians) have a tough time making money off of their profession. So, why do they do it? Why would they spend the better part of the night working to make someone else feel good? I'll tell you why. It's because they enjoy making others feel good. They enjoy filling the space with good vibes and filling the floor with dancing patrons.

Now as you're reading, you might ask yourself; what the hell is he talking about and why is he bringing up these DJs. Well, I can't expand on what the hell I'm talking about, but I can tell you that these DJs represent all that is good in Austin. And, while God-awful wannabe DJs flaunt their garbage sounds in haunts like Panagea, Prague and QUA; these guys pound the pavement in the newer, hipper and sometimes divey-er spots.

Whether its the fun style of Prince Klassen, the rawness of Bird Peterson or the jazz-funktastic taste of Chicken George; this town has a jockey to fit any style.

So, to further commemorate the better DJs of Austin, I give you some tracks from them. n-joi.
